Mechanical Behaviour of Cyanate Ester/epoxy Blends after Reactor Irradiation to High Neutron Fluences
نویسندگان
چکیده
The mechanical strength of conventional epoxy resins drops dramatically after irradiation to a fast neutron fluence of 1x10 m (E>0.1 MeV). Recent results demonstrated that cyanate ester / epoxy blends were not affected at this fluence level. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance potential of these blends at higher fluence levels without significant degradation of their mechanical properties. Short-beam shear as well as static tensile tests were carried out at 77 K prior to and after irradiation to fast neutron fluences of up to 4x10 m (E>0.1 MeV) in the TRIGA reactor at ambient temperature (340 K). In addition, load controlled tension-tension fatigue measurements were performed, in order to simulate the pulsed operation conditions of a tokamak. Initial results show that only a small reduction of the mechanical strength under static and dynamic load is observed at a fast neutron fluence of 2x10 m (E>0.1 MeV). After exposure to 4x10 m (E>0.1 MeV) the interlaminar shear strength of materials with a cyanate ester content of 40 % or more is only reduced by 20 % to 30 %.

Characterization of advanced cyanate ester/epoxy insulation systems before and after reactor irradiation
Insulation systems for fusion magnets have to operate in a harsh environment, especially also under intense radiation. Over the past years, cyanate ester (CE) resins have been playing an increasingly important rolebecauseof their enhanced temperatureandradiation resistancecompared toconventional epoxy resins. Blending CEwith epoxy resins offers the possibility tomanufacture radiation resistant ...
متن کاملCharacterization and qualification of advanced insulators for fusion magnets
Intensive research over the past decades demonstrated that the mechanical material performance of epoxy based glass fiber reinforced plastics, which are normally used by industry as insulating materials in magnet technology, degrades dramatically upon irradiation to fast neutron fluences above 1 × 1022 m−2 (E > 0.1 MeV), which have to be expected in large fusion devices like ITER. This triggere...
متن کاملProperty Changes of Cyanate Ester / Epoxy Insulation Systems Caused by an Iter-like Double Impregnation and by Reactor Irradiation
Because of the double pancake design of the ITER TF coils the insulation will be applied in several steps. As a consequence, the conductor insulation as well as the pancake insulation will undergo multiple heat cycles in addition to the initial curing cycle. In particular the properties of the organic resin may be influenced, since its heat resistance is limited. Two identical types of sample c...

The ITER mock-up project was launched in order to demonstrate the feasibility of an industrial impregnation process using the new cyanate ester / epoxy blend. The mock-up simulates the TF winding pack cross section by a stainless steel structure with the same dimensions as the TF winding pack at a length of 1 m. It consists of 7 plates simulating the double pancakes, each of them is wrapped wit...
متن کاملEffect of Micro Glass Flake on Morphological and Rheological Behaviour of Epoxy Vinyl Ester Composite Coatings
In the present work, attempts were made to investigate the reinforcement and treatment effect of GF on morphological and rheological behaviour of GF/epoxy vinyl ester composites. GF was incorporated into epoxy vinyl ester resin by sonication, and mechanical agitation. Rheological and morphological properties were studied as a function of particle treatment and size distributions. The dispersion...
